Jacó, Garabito – With an investment of nearly 300 million colones, the municipality of Garabito, in alliance with entrepreneurs and the Development of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT), is building a highway that stretches through four communities and will benefit more than 2500 residents in the area. The project in progress brings together the communities of Bajamar , Guacalillo, Cuarros and Lagunillas of Garabito. The purpose is to convert the rural path into 21 Kilometers of asphalt, with two lanes going in both directions.
“This was once an abandoned area, that no one knew well, not even locals, but there is a tremendous potential for tourists in the area”, said mayor of Garabito. The local municipality provided the necessary equipment to complete the job, as well as several squads of laborers, and used its own resources to put down the first layer of asphalt. Additionally, the Department of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) is supplying the necessary asphalt, while the community and the local associations are cooperating with the clean up of the new road. The project includes curbs and a complete storm drain system. Immediately following the completion of this road (estimated to be one month) the proper placement of traffic signals and markings will be put in place. “It will be a very wide road, opening up the possibility for speeding, so it will be necessary to put in the signaling as soon as possible”, added mayor Elizondo. Width: Up to 7m wide in some areas, and the narrowest section will be 14m wide. “From this road the beach will be accessible to the Bajamar and Guacalillo communities, right at the Tarcoles River”, explained Elizondo. According to the mayor Elizondo the route borders the beach and passes by the Mangrove of the area, allowing for a panoramic view. The road will reach the Garabito and Puntarenas town in minutes. The majority of the residents in the area live in the Department of Agricultural Development (IDA) parcels. “Ever since, the road has been open it’s become much easier to take children to school and now distribution trucks can frequent the area ; We used to have problems obtaining ice for the restaurant”, said Ana Serrano , Guacalillo resident. Local administration acquired a five hectare property in Lagunillas where a social project will be developed, housing 250 families from the area. A socialized health care clinic is already under construction in the community. “It will be the boom for Garabito bringing in funds from commerce in the country”, reaffirmed Elizondo. |
